A lively boy named Daizaemon Kaze, who is usually just called “Dai-chan”, comes to Tokyo from his village, where he lived with various animal species after his father’s death. Now, he aims to find out more about the art of judo. So, he visits a friend of his late father in the hope of learning in his dojo and befriends Kikuko, the young daughter of the judo master, who knows a few judo tricks herself, as well as the equally talented cat Nyanko-Sensei. Although the country boy displays strange behaviour from time to time, as he is prone to tears, immediately starts dancing to music and sometimes undresses for practically no reason, he soon becomes quite popular with the people around him. While Nyanko and Kikuko teach him to become a champion one day, unexpected feelings begin to grow inside him …

Ein lebhafter Junge namens Daizaemon Kaze, der meist einfach nur »Dai-chan« genannt wird, lebt mit verschiedenen Tierarten in einem Dorf. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters begibt er sich in die Hauptstadt Tokio. Sein Ziel ist es, hier mehr über die Kunst des Judos in Erfahrung zu bringen. So besucht er einen Freund seines verstorbenen Vaters, in der Hoffnung, in seinem Dojo lernen zu können. Dort freundet er sich mit Kikuko, der jungen Tochter des Judo-Meisters, die selbst den ein oder anderen Judo-Trick beherrscht, sowie mit der ebenso recht talentierten Katze Nyanko-Sensei an. Obwohl der Landjunge hin und wieder ein komisches Verhalten an den Tag legt, da er zum Weinen neigt, bei Musik sofort zum Tanzen anfängt und sich manchmal praktisch grundlos auszieht, ist er bei den Menschen in seiner Umgebung bald schon recht beliebt. Während Nyanko und Kikuko ihn als Lehrmeister unterweisen, damit er eines Tages ein Champion werden kann, beginnen ungeahnte Gefühle in ihm zu wachsen …
